well as the outer loop, nice and clear. wilson bridge, no issues. traveling in the southeast, sousa, no problems. here's the douglass and key bridge, nice and quiet. checking the rails too. so far, no reported delays on the metro, marc, or vre. all are running on or close to schedule. back in ten minutes. danella, back over to you. this morning we're hoping to learn more about the heartbreaking loss of the panda cub at the national zoo. the cub was just a few days old. megan mcgrath with more. >> reporter: good morning. just so much sadness here at the national zoo. the birth of the cub was unexpected. the zoo staff absolutely thrilled it happened. of course, on sunday something went terribly wrong. we are expecting to learn the preliminary results of that animal autopsy perhaps sometime today. we may learn more about exactly what killed this cub. mei xiang was seeming to do a very good job as a mother.

everything seemed to be on track. the cub was making noises, seemed to be healthy. then on sunday, something went horribly wrong. at 9:00 a.m., that's the last noise the zoo staff heard from the baby. at 9:17 mei xiang put out a distress call, a honking noise which was unusual for her. that alerted zoo staff was something was wrong. they sprang into action. by the time they got to the cub, however, it was not breathing. they tried cpr and other things to revive the cub, but they just could not bring it back. as you would imagine, the staff here very, very upset about the death. >> the keepkeepers, the veterinarians, the volunteers we watching this cub with great joy and with great passion. the loss -- there's no other word for it. it's just devastating for us at this time. >> reporter: zoo staff say there were no obvious signs of trauma, no obvious signs of infection. again, they hope to learn more with preliminary results from this animal autopsy later today. reporting live from the national

zoo, megan mcgrath, news 4. aaron, back to you. >> megan, thank you. police in gaithersburg are investigating a deadly crash along the great seneca highway and lakelands drive around 8:00. a woman was pulled from the wreckage in critical condition. she later died. her name has not been released. four minutes after the hour. mitt romney is hoping a bus tour gets his presidential campaign back on track. the republican presidential nominee will visit ohio and virginia on the tour. both states are key to his white house hopes. romney campaigned in another battleground state yesterday, colorado. romney has slipped in recent polls. he trails president obama in colorado, iowa, and wisconsin. in the latest nbc news/wall street journal/marist poll. today president obama will travel to new york city to take part in the week long general assembly of the united nations. he is one of more than 100 heads of state converging on the city. leaders started arriving yesterday, including iranian

president mahmoud ahmadinejad. iran's nuclear ambitions are expected to be one of the hot topics of the week long meeting. the rise of al qaeda in west africa and the problems in syria will also be discussed. president obama plans to speak before the assembly tomorrow. and secretary of state hillary clinton will be spending her time between the u.n. and the annual meeting of the clinton global initiative. the meeting is hosted by her husband, former president bill clinton. it brings together heads of state and business leaders as well as scholars to discuss social change. president bill clinton will speak to the group today. home may be where the heart is, but it's not where the wins are for the redskins. for the first time since 2006, they drop their home opener, but it wasn't without plenty of offense. instead, it was the defense again that let the games slip away. dan hellie has more on the struggles from fedex field. >> despite a valiant effort from robert griffin iii, the offense once again falls short at fedex

rescue workers are searching for climbers lost in an avalanche that killed nine people on a nepal mountain. yesterday's avalanche hit more than two dozen climbers. at least ten people survived. six people are still missing. we're told many of the climbers were french, german, and italian. a developing story in china. a company that makes apple's iphones has suspended production today following a fight that

involved at least 2,000 employees. fox con technology closed today after a fight erupted in a dormitory. a security guard hit an employee. 40 people were hurt. fox con says production will resume tomorrow. a bitter sweet weekend for baltimore ravens wide receiver torrey smith. he turned in one of his best games as a pro but did that with a heavy heart. smith's younger brother died saturday night while riding his motorcycle in northern virginia. smith, a former terrapin receiver, decided to play in last night's game against the patriots. he scored two touchdowns in a ravens win. afterwards, smith talked about playing with that weight on his shoulders. >> you play with a heavy heart. you want to play for that person. i know my mom and all my family and everyone was back at the house. i texted my mom when i got here to the stadium. that's when i really made the decision i was going to play. she was excited about it. she was like, of course he'd want you to play. >> ravens had a moment of

silence before the game for jones. police are still investigating the crash, but they say alcohol was not a factor. the police and fbi agents who caught the former marine responsible for firing at several military buildings will be honored today. yonathan melaku pled guilty to shooting at the pentagon, quantico, and two marine recruiting centers. no one was injured, but he did cost thousands of dollars of damage. tonight's shield ceremony will honor them. tonight a former university professor convicted of murder will receive a life sentence. amy bishop is charged with killing three of her colleagues and injuring three others at the university of alabama huntsville in 2010. bishop struck a plea deal two weeks ago that will spare her the death penalty, but she'll spend the rest of her life in prison. witnesses say she was digruntled after being denied teen you'nure

university. a scary moment as a flight attendant's gun went off at the airport in philadelphia. when an officer picked the gun up, it fired, hitting a nearby wall. no one was hurt. the flight attendant forgot she had the gun in her handbag. she did have a permit to carry a firearm but was given a citation for disorderly conduct. an italian man is in jail for impersonating an airline pilot. he created a fake identity as a pilot for lufthansa. officials were suspicious saying he seemed too young to be a captain. he traveled for free on at least one flight but never actually flew a plane. lufthansa is investigating the incident. firefighters in washington state are hoping to make significant progress today in a battle against several huge wildfires. officials feared lightning and winds could spark several more

flames, but that never transpired. they've contained 30% of one fire that scorched 40,000 acres. about 200 homes still under evacuation orders. a wildfire that sparked on sunday in california has quickly spread. the shockey fire is about 60 miles east of san diego, not far from the mexican border. evacuations are in place for several neighborhoods near the fire. fire officials are investigating what sparked that blaze. you may need to spend some extra time caring for your yard this fall. are the drought that plagued our area for much of the summer took its toll on yards everywhere. landscapers suggest you aerate your lawn for the soil that dried out. representing an aerator can be expensive. so they suggest you go in with neighbors to rent one. >> potentially get a deal having

continue dominating headlines three weeks into the nfl season. the officials made several mistakes during yesterday's games. including the redskins-bengals game. the official penalized the skins 20 yards for a misconduct penalty. it should have been a 15-yard penalty, and that was made because they were arguing about another mistake the refs made about how much time was left in the game. then there was this play in the cowboys-buccaneers game. dallas wide receiver kevin ogletree stumbled on a referee's hat. the ref threw his hat to indicate ogletree had run out of bounds during the game. unfortunately, he threw the hat right where the receiver was running. ogletree visibly angry, but fortunately, he was not hurt. this week nbc is taking an in depth look at the challenges and possible solution of education in our nation. the annual education nation summit kicked off with the teacher town hall. more than 300 educators gathered at new york's public library to

head southbound and northbound between rockville and germantown. no issues to report. aaron, over to you. >> thank you, danella. let's go to news 4's melissa mollet with breaking news. >> a suicide car bomb has killed four children in iraq's western province. the bomb exploded monday morning near a primary school 85 miles west of baghdad. it injured six children as well. it went off as a police patrol passed by yesterday. it happened to be the first day of school there. at the live desk, melissa mollet, news 4. new this morning, fire crews trying to figure out what caused a house fire in temple hills. firefighters responded to the block of toby drive around 2:15 this morning. crews able to control the flame. everyone got out. fairfax county leaders holding the first of several public meetings to pay for much needed transportation projects. to pay for the improvements.

tonight's meeting will take place at the west springfield office on rolling road. it begins at 7:00. there will be several more meetings in the coming weeks. montgomery county leaders will also discuss their transportation needs. the maryland public service commission will talk about restoring power in the first 24 hours of a power outage. the commission will discuss whether utilities will be banned from collecting the money. utilities have been allowed to charge customers throughout extended outages in january. the policy was changed to allow it only to the first 24 hours after storms. some customers complained after that storm knocked out power to hundreds of thousands of customers for about a week. mitt romney will begin this week by campaigning in two battleground states. he'll launch a bus tour that

will take him through ohio and virginia. the republican presidential nominee held this rally last night in denver. that city will host the first presidential debate next week. romney has come under fire for what he's paid in taxes in recent years. he defended his tax returns on 60 minutes last night. one of the reasons the capital gains tax rate is lower is because capital has already been taxed once at the corporate level, as high as 35%. >> so you think it is fair? >> it's the right way to encourage economic growth, to get people to invest, to start businesses, to put people to work. >> romney also clarified controversial comments he made about americans who don't pay income tax. he said he wants to help all americans, whether they pay taxes or not. >> president obama is using those controversial comments in a new campaign ad. this commercial starts running today. it suggests romney needs to come clean on taxes he paid in the past. on "60 minutes" last night, the

president defended criticism the national debt has gone up 60% since he took office. >> when i came into office, i inherited the biggest deficit in our history, and over the last four years, the deficit has gone up, but 90% of that is as a consequence of two wars that weren't paid for, as a consequence of tax cuts that weren't paid for, a prescription drug plan that was not paid for, and then the worst economic crisis since the great depression. >> the president also says our economy is on the right track. 5:35 right now. todd akin trying to pick up momentum in his bid to win one of missouri's senate seats. the republican congressman will hold a fund-raiser today with newt gingrich. he'll meet with a group of influential pastors tomorrow before embarking on a statewide bus tour. akin trying to regain footing in the election since making controversial comments about pregnancy and rape last month.

he still trails claire mcaskill in several pulls. the recording machine will make sure the voting machines work. the pre-election testing will go through saturday. today we expect to learn how widespread drug use is in our country. the substance abuse and mental health services administration will release the results of its national survey on drug use. the annual report is the largest of its kind, and it's the main resource for the government in determining how many people use illegal drugs, alcohol, tobacco, and also how many people misuse prescription drugs. scientists say they've completed a major analysis of the genetics of breast cancer. researchers analyzed the dna of tumors from 825 patients. they say breast cancers appear to fall into four main classes. one class showed similarities to ovarian cancers, suggesting it might be vulnerable to drugs

used for ovarian cancer. the first redskins home game is leaving players and fans with a bit of a bitter taste in their mouths this morning. it is the first time the skins have lost a home opener since 2006. the burgundy and gold were simply outgunned for most of the game, ultimately falling 38-31. after falling behind 24-10 at the half, the redskins fought back to tie the game and keep within striking distance. but a last second shot at the end of the game just wasn't meant to be. it's the seventh straight home loss for the skins, who haven't won at fedex field since the second game last season. so tough to watch. definitely wasn't the homecoming fans were hoping for for rg3's debut the afedex field. we caught up with some fans after the game. while the plays stood out, so did the mistakes of the refs. >> they played hard. we had some ref mistakes.

a clash between a local pastor and the church board members nowhere near over even after a ruling from a maryland appeals court. the court reversed the decision that removed pastor joel peebles from his leadership position at the jerricho city of praise. thousands of members stood by the pastor's side, moving with him when he was kicked out. now peebles and those members say they're making plans to return to the church's main landover campus. >> the church is now coming out, and it's very, very clear that pastor joel, as well as these thousands of members that have been displaced rightfully can return to the ministry that their tithes and offerings helped to build. >> jerricho's board, which

kicked peebles out released a statement saying the decision does not change the current leadership. the statement goes back to the lower court. counselors will be on hand today for watkins mill high school students after a girl was hit by a police cruiser. friday night a police car hit 15-year-old jania richards following the school's football game. several fights broke out after the game, and she was running away from the fights when the cruiser struck her. there's no word on the extent of her injuries. the officer was placed on paid administrative leave. dozens of people gathered at the prince george's landfill in virginia to honor veterans in a memorial service. their bodies were dumped in the landfill after being incinerated in dover, delaware. a bronze plaque was unveiled. the memorial was approved last month by king george supervisors who own the property. a biathlon that benefits wounded warriors home from iraq

and afghanistan. the team river runner biathlon includes one mile of kayaking on the potomac and a three mile run, or for some athletes, three miles on a hand cycle. many of the participants and volunteers were treated at walter reed army medical center at bethesda naval hospital. team river runner was hoping to raise $150,000 for wounded service members. today on demand car services will be under the microscope in washington. district lawmakers will meet to discuss rules for companies like uber which have become more and more popular. the d.c. taxicab commission proposed more rules, which includes supplying a certain number of cars that are handicaps accessible and raising prices during times of high demand. they say these rules are anti-competitive and only designed to put uber out of business. gas prices going down after sharp increases over the past two months. in d.c., gas is 4 cents cheaper
